 Holiday tree safety tips

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department and National Fire Protection Association remind residents as they deck the halls this holiday season, to be fire-smart. A small fire that spreads to a holiday tree can grow very quickly. Below are some tips to keep homes and families safe during the holidays:

·         Placing the Tree: Before placing a tree in the stand, cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk, making sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source. The tree should not block any exits and be watered daily.

·         Lighting the Tree: Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory, as some lights are for outdoor use only. Replace any strings of lights that have worn or broken cords, or loose bulb connections. Read the manufacturer's instructions for the number of light strands that should be connected to one another.

·         Always turn off holiday tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

Election judges sought for April election

Election judges are being sought for the April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election in Cook and Lake counties. The responsibilities of an election judge are to set up voting sites, in addition to verifying voter identity and issuing ballots on election day. Interested individuals must be a citizen of the United States, as well as a registered voter/eligible to vote in the county they would like to serve in. Training is also required in order to be an election judge, and training in addition to the basic required training can qualify election judges to be compensated at a higher rate for their work.
