Liquor store burgled / BG Days set / Contested Board race looms

Retail burglary – Police report that officers responded to an alarm at Dev Liquors, 1170 McHenry Road. Upon arrival, reports say officers observed two vehicles pulling out of the parking lot. Officers pursued the vehicles at a high rate of speed on McHenry Road, but, say reports, were unable to apprehend them. Reports say the front window of the store was smashed and items inside were in disarray.

Retail theft – Police were summoned to Woodman’s Market, 1550 Deerfield Pkwy. in response to a complaint of a person stealing items. Police did not identify the person nor the items taken. The department did, however, say the person was charged with retail theft and criminal trespass to “real” property.

Theft – A couple having dinner at Flambe Indiana, 1155 McHenry Rd. apparently didn’t like the restaurants’ smoking policy. Police say the couple entered the restaurant, and ate dinner. After finishing their dinner, the man lit a cigarette and when asked to step outside to smoke, he and his female companion obliged, but didn’t return. They also did not pay their $36 dinner tab. For the record, since Jan. 1, 2008, indoor public places and places of employment in Illinois are smoke-free.

Motor vehicle burglary – A resident 1100 block of Johnson Drive reported to police that someone broke into his car, a 2015 Subaru. Reports say “several items” were taken, but police declined to list what was taken or the value of the stolen property.

Bike stolen – but found! – A resident of the Fireside Terrace Condominiums told police that his bicycle was taken from the back patio of their condo. But there’s good news. Reports say the responding officer “drove around the complex and located the bicycle.” For whatever reason, reports did not say where the bike was found.

Package swiped – A resident in the 200 block of Brunswick reported to police that a package was apparently stolen by a man posing as a resident. Reports are sketchy and do not indicate what was allegedly stolen and from what delivery service.

New bids eyed for Spray ‘N Play

The Park Board Aug. 26 heard new options for the expansion of the Spray ‘N Play water play area at Mike Rylko Park. The new options followed a report at the Board’s Aug. 12 meeting by Laurie Hoffman, Planning And Development Manager, that bids for the original plans were higher than expected. The bids ranged from $2,312,611.74 to $3,120,665. In her memo to the Board, Hoffman noted that “The budget for this project as approved by the Board was $ 2,118,453.83”.

Hoffman told the Board at its Aug. 26 meeting, “To have the Spray N’ Play operational for Summer 2025 and provide a dedicated concession space for the Amphitheater, the staff is looking to descope the project and issue for bid later this fall.” The estimated cost for the “descoping” is $1,778,419.40, which includes an “alternate shade structure.” Information about the original bids and the revised costs can be found in the Board packets at this site.

Tipsy potty / Stein out, Johnson in / Bids douse park plan

Retail theft – Staff members at the Jewel-Osco at 79 N. McHenry Rd. reported to police that an unknown man made off with  $867.71 worth of merchandise. Employees said the man was wearing black and white shoes, blue jeans, a black jacket, a blue mask, and a red and white cap. He reportedly came into the store around 9:30 p.m. and placed a two-liter bottle of soda into a shopping cart and then continued to walk around the store. Reports say police were told the man started taking over-the-counter medication items and placing them into a reusable bag near the rear of the cart. He allegedly placed 29 items into the reusable bag before proceeding to the self-checkout where he only paid for the soda with cash before exiting the store.

Battery -- A 42-year-old man was charged with battery after an incident on McHenry Road. Police did not release details.

Theft --  A man reported to police that he attached his solar powered phone battery device to the parking lot street light located in front of the Starbucks at 820 N. Milwaukee Ave. and when he returned, it was missing.

Retail theft – Police report that a man concealed some unpaid groceries inside his shopping cart while shopping at Woodman’s. He was apprehended when he left the store. The man was issued an adjudication citation for retail theft and a trespass warning. Reports did not indicate what was taken or the value of the items.

Criminal damage – A resident on Oak Creek Drive told police someone broke the rear, left window of her vehicle sometime between midnight and noon on Aug. 8.

Theft – A resident in the 200 block of Brunswick Drive that a package was stolen from his property on Aug. 12. Security footage showed that the person who allegedly stole the items was a man wearing a green shirt, jeans, black shoes, black hat, a medical mask, and carrying a black bag walking away from the residence into a black vehicle last seen heading southbound towards Bank Lane.

Resisting & obstructing peace officers – Sometimes it is best just to do as you’re told. Especially in a crowded parking lot. Police responded to the parking lot at Woodman’s Market,1550 E Deerfield Parkway in response to “multiple 911 calls” of a vehicle driving erratically in the parking lot. Police arrived on scene and met with the driver, who refused to identify himself and began to try and enter his vehicle to leave. He failed to listen to commands and was subsequently arrested for obstructing and resisting a peace officer.

Tipsy potty – An anonymous person told police that while walking on the path at Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker, he noticed that someone had tipped over a Porta Potty. He told police that when he started his walk, the Porta Potty was not tipped, but a short while later he saw that it was tipped over. Reports say that the responding officer observed the Porta Potty tipped on its side with all four of its ground anchors exposed. And, if you must know, the officer reported that he checked the inside and there was nobody inside. Feel free to write your own ending.

Stein out

Village Board member Andrew Stein, who has served on the Board since 2011 is not seeking re-election.

Stein made his announcement in a Facebook post in which he said “It is at this time that I choose to announce to you, my friends and family, that I have decided that I will not be running for a fifth term as one of your village trustees. I plan to finish out my current term which ends in May of 2025. At that time, I will have served the village as a Trustee and Zoning Board Commissioner for more than 20 years. It is time for me to step aside…I take great pride in the fact that I was able to be a part of helping Buffalo Grove move forward and bring so much change to our village. It is time, however, for others to step up to govern.”

In the meantime, the Daily Herald reports that Kevin Richards, vice chair of the village’s planning and zoning commission, said he is running for a two-year seat on the board, to fill out the unexpired term of Gregory Pike. Pike stepped down and was replaced by Denice Bocek. Bocek told the Herald that she plans on running for a four-year spot on the Board. Trustees Lester Ottenheimer III and Joanne Johnson are also up for re-election.

Johnson in

Trustee Joanne Johnson has announced that she is running for re-election in the April 1, 2025 election. Johnson, who has lived in Buffalo Grove for 36 years, is completing her tenth year on the Village Board. Prior to becoming a member of the Village Board, she was on the Planning and Zoning Commission for five years

In her announcement, Johnson noted that “Buffalo Grove has changed a bit over the last decade, and it was very intentional. We have seen $380 million in public and private investments with another $250 million planned for the next two years. All with NO (sic) increase in taxes! There’s a reason why Buffalo Grove lands on the top of “Best Places to Live” lists on a regular basis. We purposely involved our residents in strategic and development planning to get to where we are today.”

High bids douse Spray N’ Play for now

The Buffalo Grove Park District thought budgeting $1.4 million for a revamped and expanded Spray N’ Play facility at Mike Rylko Park was a good idea. Until they got the bids. According to reporting in the Journal & Topics, the lowest bid for the project was $2.31 million, leading park commissioners to turn off the faucet on the project for now.
