 Police Reports

Mutual aid helps nab burglary suspect --  Officers responded to a residence in the 400 Block of Gregg Lane after being advised by the Niles Police Department of a possible home burglary.

The Niles PD. told police they had a male subject in custody who had possessions from the Buffalo Grove residence, which they believe were taken without the owners' consent. Responding BGPD officers observed a shattered window and contacted the homeowner. The homeowner confirmed that the individual, who was known to them, should not have been at the house, and the items he took did not belong to him.

Owner missing -- An officer located a stray dog hiding under a parked vehicle at the Spray ‘N Play, 951 N. McHenry Rd. The dog, a male pug, was not wearing any tags, and did not have a microchip. Police say his owner is still missing.

Camera --  A resident contacted police out of concern that a neighbor was recording her children while they were in their swimming pool. The resident said her brother, who was with the kids at the time, observed a silver small box with a red light illuminated on it coming from an apartment window.

The officer met with the neighbor who claimed that the only camera he has did not work or look like what was described.

Email scam -- A resident received an email from “Norton Lifelock Security” stating a purchase was made for over $200.  The resident contacted the provided 1-800 number and spoke with a man.  While on the phone, the resident noticed her computer was being remotely accessed by him.  The resident immediately hung up the  phone and contacted her bank to freeze her accounts.

Bogus cable -- A resident reported that she has been receiving multiple phone calls with New Jersey area codes. The caller claimed to work for Comcast. The caller would ask the complainant to turn on her television and open the guide menu, claiming he could remotely access the television. The complainant told police that the caller provided some information about her account information. While the officer was at the residence taking the report, the number called the house three times. The officer answered the phone and advised the caller to stop calling.

Fake rep -- A male subject knocked on the complaint’s door and asked to come inside to check the gas.  The subject was not allowed entry into the home, and the complainant could not remember if he was wearing a Nicor badge.  Nicor advised that no one was in the area. There was no vehicle description.

Trash talk --  The management of Spoerlein Commons reported that a non-tenant threw away garbage in the dumpster reserved for the Spoerlein Commons.  The trash owner was contacted, apologized, and agreed to remove their trash. Police did not say how the trash owner was identified or if they found their name at the bottom of stack of garbage.

Just cool it – A resident contacted police because he was not happy with the service received for  his air conditioner.  The responding officer mediated a satisfactory resolution and cooler heads prevailed.

Scams continue --  A resident was tricked into transferring money into foreign bank accounts.  The resident received a message purporting to be from Microsoft Security indicating his computer was infected with viruses and his bank account had been compromised.  The resident realized it was a scam and called his bank.

Another resident provided their information after receiving a text from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.  It was not actually from Jesse White.

In the meantime, another resident nearly fell victim to a grandparent scam, but she eventually realized her granddaughter was not in jail and did not need bail money.

Not an ‘upLyfting experience’ -- Officers responded to a dispute between an Lyft driver and his fare.  All parties calmed down and left the area. And for this they called the police?

Stupid is as stupid does – Buffalo Grove Police report that in the past 10 days, they have issued three tickets to motorists who were driving on suspended or revoked driver’s license, and one each for speeding in a construction zone, improper traffic lane usage, not wearing a seat belt,  no rear-view mirror, driving under the influence, and one for disregarding a traffic control light. Police did not report if the traffic light’s self-esteem was impacted or if it’s receiving counseling.

Board approves flag policy

Buffalo Grove now has a flag policy. The policy, adopted by the Village Board at its June 21 meeting, details what flags can be flown at the village-owned flagpole at Village Rotary Green.

In general, requests for celebratory or commemorative flags must follow the following guidelines:

• All applications must be made annually by a resident(s) of the Village.

• Completed applications must be submitted no later than Nov. 1 of the preceding calendar year.

• An approved list of special flags for the upcoming year will be presented to the Village Board for consideration in December.

• Any application/request received after the deadline or during the calendar year will only be considered in the following year. As a result, any future requests between now and November 1, 2021 will be considered for 2022.

The policy was drafted and presented to the Board following a contentious Committee of the Whole meeting June 7. Several Board members expressed dismay about comments not only at the meeting, but on social media.

While all board members cited their support for Pride Month and the events that take place in the village, comments by usually subdued Village Board member Eric Smith that took center stage.

“I feel passionately about what’s happened past few weeks. I am saddened that a positive event wrapped up in negativity,” Smith said, adding that he was proud that the village participated. He also said discussions and comments regarding the flying of the Pride flag at the June 7 meeting were “respectful and provided knowledge.”

Smith said he was distraught over emails calling him a homophobe and making other seemingly inappropriate comments. Smith said that while village staff and officials received emails supporting the flying of the Pride flag at Village Hall, they also received emails from residents who opposed. Smith said he was surprised that the emails from “people who were against it were more polite.”

The full policy can be found at this link.
