Burglaries probed / BGHS athletic field overhaul / Congressional art contest

Residential burglary – Police report that a home in the 600 block of Aspen Drive was burgled sometime Feb. 18. Police say residents told them everything inside the house was ransacked. Police did not report what was reportedly taken from the home or how it was entered.

Catalytic converter swiped – Police say a resident in the 701 block of Grove reported that his catalytic converter was taken from his car.

Retail theft – Police responded to the Walgreen drug store, 15 N. Buffalo Grove Rd., after employees contacted them saying two unknown men came into the store and stole two bottles of alcohol and left in a black Mazda without paying. Reports did not indicate the cost of the liquor.

Breaking and entering  --  Police report that two men entered the Mobil station, 10 W. Dundee shortly after midnight on Feb. by shattering the glass door. Once inside, reports say the two men unsuccessfully attempted to remove the ATM located just inside the entrance to the gas station. They then left the station in an unknown vehicle.

Stolen vehicle --  Police say a resident in the 800 block of Stratford Court reported that her Kia Optima was stolen from her driveway. Police have not reported if the car has been found.

Business burglaries --  Police are investigating two burglaries along Dundee Road.  The first was at Buffalo Grove Liquors. Reports say someone entered the business by breaking multiple glass door panels. Damage to the doors was estimated at $1,700. Police did not list the stolen items.

The Second burglary occurred at Smokers Hut and Sneakers. 80 W. Dundee. Reports say officers on patrol noticed that the front door had broken glass. Reports say responding officers found a piece of cement which was used to break the glass door.  Reports note that there were “several vapes laying on the floor near the counter along with one orange vape laying outside on the sidewalk.” An undetermined amount of cash was also reported missing.

Damage from DUI – A Lake Zurich man was charged with DUI, and driving too fast for conditions after a traffic accident near McHenry Road and Pauline Avenue. Reports say responding officers “observed debris strewn across the road with several light posts, trees, and a traffic signal damaged.” Police say that during the investigation they noticed that the man was showing signs of alcohol impairment.

One Book, One Community finale Feb. 25

Indian Trails, Cook Memorial and Vernon Area public libraries are sponsoring a One Book, One Community finale event at the Stevenson High School, 1 Stevenson Drive, at 1 p.m. on Feb. 25.

The event will feature Author Brendan Slocumb who will share his inspiration behind The Violin Conspiracy.

The event will include live string music performed by students from the Libertyville High School orchestra. Copies of Slocumb’s books will be available for purchase courtesy of the Book Bin of Northbrook.

BGHS athletic fields getting multi-million-dollar overhaul

            The first of three phases of an overhaul to Buffalo Grove High School’s athletic fields is expected to begin this summer. According to reporting in the Daily Herald, the phase, carrying a $5.1 million price tag, will include regrading parts of the existing fields to pave the way for the new athletic facilities: a varsity girls’ softball field with dugouts and bleachers; a 100-yard artificial turf field with lights for football, soccer, lacrosse and physical education classes; 10 tennis courts and associated bleachers; and a concession stand building with bathrooms and storage.

            Additional phases will be done in 2025 and 2026 or 2027. The Herald reports that “While the Northwest Suburban High School District 214 school board approved bids totaling $5.1 million for the phase one work in December, officials didn’t provide a cost estimate for the rest of the project.”

Vendor applications available

            Vendor applications are now available for the 2024 season of the Buffalo Grove Farmers Market.

Vendors who have products that they think would be of interest to shoppers can email their application request to vbgfarmersmarket@gmail.com.

In accordance with our village charter, only agricultural products, food items, or food services can be sold. Craft items are not permitted.

However, vendors with a Class G6 license granted by the Village of Buffalo Grove can sell liquor items

Vet clinic opens

            Got a sick dog, cat or ferret? The new Veterinary Emergency Group at the corner of Lake-Cook and McHenry roads is now open. The Daily Herald reports that it’s the fifth center opened by the group.

Musical program on Twain set

The Indian Trails Library District will present “Catch the Twain: The Musical” from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at in the Lake-Cook Room at the Library, 355 Schoenbeck Rd., Wheeling. Warren Brown will portray Mark Twain and share humorous insights about Twain’s life, family, books, world travels, anecdotes and maxims. Folk musician and songwriter Mark Dvorak will provide the soundtrack for Brown’s performance with old-time banjo tunes, period songs and audience participation. Congressional art competition open

Congressman Brad Schneider (D-10)  is encouraging Tenth District students to participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition. The theme for this year's contest is " Celebrating the American Cultural Mosaic."

Area high school students are invited to submit a piece of art they have created within the past year, which will be judged by a panel of local educators and artists. Students are encouraged to interpret the theme of " Celebrating the American Cultural Mosaic" creatively and submit artwork that reflects their personal interpretation.

Details on how to apply can be found here. The deadline to submit artwork for the competition is 5 p.m. Friday, March 22.

The winning submission will be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol for a year. The second and third place pieces will be displayed in the Congressman's District and Washington D.C. offices, respectively.

“Grease” performances set

Big Deal Productions is presenting Grease: School Edition as the winter young adult musical production.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on March 1, 2, and 8 and at 3 p.m. on March 3 and March 9 at 3 pm.

All performances are at the Community Arts Center, 225 N. McHenry Rd.

Indoor farmers market Sunday

            An indoor farmers market is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday Feb. 25, at the Vernon Township Community Center, 2900 N. Main Street. Produce, baked goods, jams and jellies are among the items that will be available.

Battery, burglary probed / Mo Welborn remembered / Valentine's Day cards wanted

 Domestic battery -- Police responded to Chase Plaza at the corner of Lake-Cook and Arlington Heights roads after a woman told them she was “battered” by a man during a domestic dispute. The man was charged with felony aggravated battery of a pregnant victim, and domestic battery. Police reports did not indicate the man’s court date.

Residential burglary – Officers responded to the 900 block of Lucinda Drive in response to a report of residential burglary. Upon arrival police met with a resident who said someone entered her home and stole various items. This investigation is ongoing.

Messy vandalism – A resident in the 1000 block of Greenridge Road reported that someone poured milk over one of their cars and eggs and barbecue sauce on a second car in addition to throwing eggs on the garage door and siding of garage.

Retail theft- Employees at the Walgreens at 1701 N. Buffalo Grove Rd. summoned police after they said they observed two Hispanic females taking merchandise. Reports say approximately three bags worth of merchandise was taken.

DUI charges puts man on a limb – An Arlington Heights man was charged with DUI, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after he apparently lost control of his car and hit a tree on Buffalo Grove Road near Dundee Road. He was not charged with damaging village property. Some police departments will cite drivers if they hit municipality owned property.

Escape – A woman being held by police for a bond forfeiture warrant for retail theft requested to have paramedics taken to Northwest Community Hospital as she was suffering from what reports say was a pre-existing medical condition. She was taken to the hospital, but apparently had an ulterior motive.  While waiting for treatment at the hospital, the woman escaped from custody and left the hospital on foot. Buffalo Grove Police were able to locate her a short time later. She was charged with escape from a peace officer.

Mo Welborn remembered

            Tributes have poured in for longtime resident and passionate volunteer, Mo Welborn, who passed away on Jan. 28.

            In a Facebook post, former Village President Elliott Hartstein said “There are no words to adequately express what an amazing woman Queen Mo was . She was also a bundle of happy energy even when she had hurdles to overcome . She was the personification of Buffalo Grove days and did so much for the community . She touched so many and (I) feel lucky to have known her.” Additional information about Mrs. Welborn can be found in this Daily Herald report.

 

Nonprofit makes BG new home

Nonprofit resource provider GiveNKind has moved to Buffalo Grove. It opened its new distribution center at 1000 Asbury Drive Jan. 25. It was previously based in Mundelein.

GiveNKind takes excess goods from businesses and distributors and connects them with the needs of area nonprofits.

Last year, its staff and volunteers distributed over $10 million in donated goods to nearly 200 nonprofits in Chicagoland. The new 13,600 square-foot location will enable GiveNKind greater opportunities to expand its operations. Its previous space was just over 5,500 square-feet.

Party to feature superheroes, princesses

            The Park District is hosting a “Superhero and Princess Party” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 at the Community Arts Center, 255 McHenry Road.

            Attendees will have the chance to meet your favorite superheroes and princesses, who will be on-site to meet and take pictures. There will be games with prizes, entertainment and family fun.

Parents must accompany children during the entire event. Only children need to be registered.  Registration will not be taken on the day of the event. For more information, contact Mike Pfeiffer at 847-850-2108.

 

Maker-in-Residence applications due

The deadline for the Indian Trails Public Library District’s  Maker-in-Residence program. The Maker-in-Residence program is Monday, Feb. 5.

The program takes place during the Summer Library Adventure (SLA) program in the summer of 2024.

As a Maker in Residence, participants will:

• Complete a project to be exhibited at the Library at the completion of the residency. A community-centered exhibit is encouraged.

• Have a paid six-week residency in the library’s Launch Pad, working on your craft in the space.

• Offer workshops for library members.

• Have access to the Launch Pad equipment and staff assistance.

Sen. Johnson collecting Valentine’s Day cards

State Sen. Adriane Johnson (D-30) Valentine’s Day cards to be distributed next month at senior facilities across her 30th District.

Homemade or store-bought cards can be dropped off or mailed now through 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Johnson’s office, 149 S. Genesee St., Waukegan, Ill. 60085.

The 30th District includes portions of Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, and northern Lake County, including all or parts of Mundelein, Lincolnshire, Vernon Hills, Gurnee, Libertyville, Green Oaks and Waukegan.

New HR czar

            If you’re applying for a job with the village, odds are you’ll meet with  Kathryn “Katie” Golbach, the Human Resources Director. Golbach has been HR Management Analyst with the village since August of 2018. She is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University.

TIF funds get green light for Dundee Road development

            The Village Board Jan. 16 approved $11 million in Tax Increment Financing funds for the development of parcels on Dundee Road affectionately known for years as the “Rohrman properties.”

            The development, to be known as “Bison Crossing” is anchored by a Tesla Sales and Customer Service Center. Demolition of the existing buildings is expected to start this month. Construction of the Tesla facility is scheduled to start in April or May with completion in Spring of 2025.

            Plans for the development also call for small retail stores and a 221-unit apartment complex. Additional information is available in this Daily Herald report.

 

New graphics, slogan get Board OK

            If you’re seeing a new look on village vehicles, letterhead, banners and other items, it’s because the Village Board approved a new graphics and village identity package at its Jan. 16 meeting. In addition to new graphics, the village is now touting its “Smart. With Heart” slogan. Both the slogan and graphics package followed a nine-month initiative spearheaded by North Star Place Branding + Marketing whose nearly $98,000-plus contract included meetings, interviews and presentations to various village stakeholders.

The new graphics package will be included on village vehicles, print materials, banners and apparel.
