Former Village President Beverly Sussman dies

Former Village Board President Beverly Sussman has died. Mrs. Sussman, who spent 29 years in village service, including eight as Village Board President, died earlier today. She was 83.

Prior to being elected president, she was a Village Board Trustee, and member of the Rick Kahen Commission for Residents with Disabilities.

Mrs. Sussman and her husband, Marty, moved to Buffalo Grove in 1971.  After leaving office in 2023 she said “we’ve loved every minute of the (then) 51 years that we’ve been here, from the annual Buffalo Grove Days festival to the excellent school system and the great sense of community that Buffalo Grove has to offer.”

At that time, she reflected on her term as village president, saying, “my top priorities have been: creating opportunities for economic growth, setting the Village up for long term economic stability, and setting the Village on a great path for the future. I'm proud of the work that the Village Board and I have done over the years to make these priorities a reality.”

She said among her accomplishments were “to enable” the creation of the Lake Cook Corridor Plan and Market Study. Among the goals of the plan, she said, was redevelopment and revitalization of the aging commercial operations within the Corridor. This provided the basis for the largest redevelopment effort in Buffalo Grove history: the Clove, a $150 million dollar investment by Kensington Partners, funded entirely by the developer’s performance and without taxpayer guarantees.

"Beverly’s commitment to public service and her deep love for Buffalo Grove leave a lasting legacy that continues to shape our Village for the better. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her service," said Village Board President, Eric Smith.

Mrs. Sussman said  “I’m so proud of the work that we’ve done to enable the Village to establish reserves for future  expenditures.” she said, adding that “I’m also proud to say that we were the first Village Board to establish an Infrastructure Modernization Program, which guarantees that Village streets and sidewalks are always in great shape and that repairs are made in a timely basis. Great strides have also been made to enhance the Village revenue.”

Mrs. Sussman said she “thoroughly enjoyed my time in office and savored the many accomplishments that have made Buffalo Grove a great place to live, work, and raise a family. I am tremendously grateful for having had the opportunity to welcome many new businesses into Buffalo Grove and to get to know so many of our residents. It has been an honor and privilege to serve the Village.”

Mrs. Sussman's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 195 N. Buffalo Grove Rd.
