 Vernon Twp. plans free shredding event Monday

The Vernon Township Highway Department will host a shredding event from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 19at the Vernon Administration Office, 3050 N. Main St., Buffalo Grove. Residents can shred cancelled or unused checks, old insurance policies, old bills, old medical records and invoices. Residents are asked not bring magazines, newspapers, manilla folders, hanging file folders, or binders.

This an onsite shredding event, however if the truck fills up, there will be locked containers on site where you will be able to safely put your documents. Shredding services will be provided by Opportunity Secure Data Destruction. Residents are limited to three medium-sized boxes.

Village Board meets Monday

The Village Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, at Village Hall, 50 Raupp Blvd. The meeting will be held in person at Village Hall with capacity-limited physical attendance.

The meeting will also be broadcast via Facebook Live; however, the comments on the stream will not be monitored by village staff and will not be read into the official record. Those not willing or able to physically attend can still participate by submitting their public comment to the Village Clerk at clerk@vbg.org or 847-459-2506 before 4:30 p.m. the day of the meeting. Library sets black history magic show

The Indian Trails Public Library District will host Tommy Terrific’s Black History Magic Show from 11 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 17.

The show highlights the accomplishments of baseball pitcher Satchel Paige, from his all-star touring shows to his Hall of Fame induction as baseball's oldest rookie and oldest player.  The show can be viewed on YouTube

 

Register for April 21 Virtual Town Hall Meeting

Lake County residents can register now for Lake County’s next Virtual Town Hall meeting on at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 21.

Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart will be joined by Lake County Health Department Executive Director Mark Pfister, Lake County Board Member/Finance & Administrative Committee Chair Paul Frank and other community leaders to discuss the latest on COVID-19 and other topical issues, and answer questions from the community.

 

Drug take-back day April 24

The Buffalo Grove Police Department is participating in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) first prescription drug collection event of the year from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 at the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Expired, unused or unneeded medications can be dropped off.  Take-home products along with informational brochures will be available. For more information, please visit the DEA website or call 847-459-2560. The Police Department has a permanent receptacle in the station’s lobby where medications can be disposed of year-round.

 

Rotary offering grants

The Buffalo Grove Rotary Club Community Grant program is offering grants for organizations tat work to benefit the Buffalo Grove community. The deadline to apply is May 30, 2021. One-time grants of up to $2,500 can be awarded to organizations that are working to make Buffalo Grove a better place to live and work. Learn more here.

 

2020 a challenging year for Fire Department

The Fire Department has released its 2020 Annual Report. According to the report, the Fire Department responded to 4,626 calls; 70 percent of those were related to emergency medical incidents. Back flow tests due May 5

Residents who have a lawn sprinkler or irrigation system are reminded that the backflow valve must be tested every year to protect the village’s drinking water system.

The deadline for this year is coming up soon on May 5. This is a requirement by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Either the village, or a group called BSI that is contracted by the Village, sends letters out to remind residents of this deadline. A temporary waiver can be applied for at a cost of $25 if sprinklers or irrigation systems will not be put into service this season. School Notes

ASHS plans in-person summer classes

Stevenson High School is planning on holding most summer school classes in-person with the possibility of adding dedicated remote learning sections.

A survey was recently sent to Patriot families to determine whether students plan to return to campus for the summer classes or plan to attend classes remotely.

District 102 offers preschool registration

Residents who live in School District 102 and have a child aged 3, should consider evaluating him/her to attend the D102 preschool program. The registration form can be found at here and complete the pre-registration form. Further information is available at this link.

 

D103 student qualifies for math nationals

Daniel Wright seventh-grader Angela Ho who was one of four students from Illinois who qualified for MATHCOUNTS Nationals, scheduled for May 8-10. The full story is available on the school's website.

 

Police Reports

             They serve and protect and also keep up with new technology. The Buffalo Grove Police Department is in the midst of converting to a new reporting system and are unable to provide reports to media organizations. Reports will be posted here as soon as they are available by the BGPD. In the meantime, let’s be careful out there.
