Report calls Buffalo Grove one of the country's safest cities

Buffalo Grove has once again been named one of the safest cities in America, according to a new report by NeighborhoodScout. Based on the latest national data available for communities with 25,000 residents or more, the report ranked the Village tenth out of the list of 100 cities across the U.S.

The report was compiled based on the latest national data available for the calendar year 2017 and includes metrics on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents, which includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault. The number of total crimes reported per city and population are considered for the rankings. The report indicates that Buffalo Grove's total crime rate for 2017 was 5.7 percent, with 235 crimes having been reported.

CAPABLE Program for Seniors

The Village of Buffalo Grove is now participating in a new program for senior citizens. The Northwest Suburban Community Aging in Place Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) program is available to residents 65 years of age and older, and aims to help seniors live independently in their home, while more fully engaging in daily activities. A meeting to plan the 10^th year of the Buffalo Grove Farmers Market is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Village Hall-lower level 7pm. New members are welcome

Village offers ‘safe zones’ for online purchases

The Buffalo Grove Police Department  offers two of these ‘safe zones’ for internet purchases; one is located inside the Police Department lobby, which allows the transaction to be recorded on both video and audio, in addition to providing a well-lit area for the exchange to take place. The second zone is in the parking lot on the west side of the police station, which is video recorded only. The station is located at 46 Raupp Boulevard in Buffalo Grove. From the Police Reports

** A Palatine woman contacted police telling them an employee of a local movie theater spat on her.  The alleged incident occurred after the woman and her children were admitted to the theater and subsequently asked to have their purses and bags searched for outside food.  They were told they couldn’t bring the food in.  While waiting for the movie to begin, the woman said the employee again approached them an “yelled” at  one of the children for bringing more outside food in to the theater.  The woman said she attempted to talk to the employee, but that she continued to yell at the children and was “spitting” on her while talking. The woman decided to leave and requested a refund, which was denied.  The woman said she didn’t think the employee intentionally spat on her, but said she was “extremely rude and disrespectful.”  The manager told police she though the woman was rude and disrespectful and yelled at her.   The manager said there are several signs indicating “no refunds.”

** Police are investigating a case of counterfeiting. An employee at a restaurant in the 700 block of south Buffalo Grove Road said a man, described as a male African-American around 24 years of age, gave the employee what appeared to be a $100 for a $10.30 purchase.  The employee contacted police about the nature of the bill.  Police said it appeared to be thinner than a regular  bill.  Using a counterfeit banknote detection pen, police noticed that while it was a real bill, it appeared to have been altered as they noticed Alexander Hamilton as the watermark.  Hamilton appears on the $10 while Benjamin Franklin appears on the $100.

** An employee of a trucking firm in the 300 block of west Dundee told police that he has not received payment on a leased trailer for the past three months. The person who leased the trailer has not responded to phone calls.

** A man called police to regarding a homeless person who was living in the church with which the man is associated.  Police found that man who admitted to living in the attic of the church early November.  The homeless man was instructed to gather his belongings which included a mattress, cooking supplies, heater, computer and monitor, video games and a game console, bags of belongings and other items.  The man was directed to a nearby PADS location.

Village unveils new website

New website – Residents looking for information on the village’s website, vbg.org, will find that the site has been revised new website. It’s the start of ongoing revisions.

Wise old SAGES?  -- There’s a new group in Buffalo Grove for senior citizens who, says Tribune/Countryside columnist Aileen Simons, wants to make retirement a bit more fun. Simons Column.

D103 Preschool Registration Opens Jan. 18

Preschool registration for Lincolnshire–Prairie View School District 103 opens Friday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for children who will turn 3 or 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019. This program is held at Laura B. Sprague School, 2425 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire, and is open to children who live in the district. Full details are at D103 Preschool registration

Kindergarten Registration Begins Jan. 18 in D103

Lincolnshire-Prairie View School District 103 kindergarten registration is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, for children who will turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019.

If parents cannot attend the Jan. 18 registration day, they are welcome to register their future kindergartener any school day between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration takes about an hour to complete. Full details are at D103 Kindergarten Registration.

Phone Scam -- A Buffalo Grove woman reported a phone scam to police, but not before she wired more than $200,000 to a bank in China.  The woman told police she received phone calls from individuals who said they were with the Beijing Police Department and that the woman was associated with  criminal investigation involving her credit cards and passport.

Stolen purse -- A woman reported her phone stolen while at a restaurant. She told police she dropped it while in the rest room and when she went back to retrieve it, the phone was gone.

Shop lifting reported -- A Wheeling man reportedly stole nearly $50 in merchandise from Woodman’s. The man admitted to stealing a can of tomato sauce but says he did not steal anything else. He faces an adjudication hearing.

Vandalism – Police report that a self-storage facility on Hastings Drive was vandalized.  Reports say vandals wrote graffiti in red paint on the side of the building as well on the roof where vandals also stuffed rocks into the heating vent which rendered the heat inoperative.

Burglary -- A residence in the 200 block of Taylor Court was reportedly burglarized sometime from Dec. 31 through Jan. 1.  Police reports say more than $10,000 worth of jewelry was reported missing from the residence.  Police reports say there were no signs of forcible entry and that entrance may have been gained through an unlocked patio door.
