Rash of auto break-ins / Vin 90 celebrates Grand Opening / Planners like new car wash

 Autos hit by break-ins – Buffalo Grove police report seven incidents in which vehicles were broken into. Police responded to the 1000 block of Barclay Blvd for a report of a burglary to vehicle. Police learned the victim's vehicle was burglarized while parked in the parking lot at approximately 8:45 a.m. Personal items were taken from the vehicle. In a second incident, police responded to the 400 block of Cedar Court South for a burglary to vehicle report. Police learned the victim's vehicle was burglarized between July 14 and 15 while it was parked in the victim's driveway. A small amount of cash was taken from the vehicle. A second vehicle on Cedar Court South was also broken into on July 14, but nothing was reported missing. In a fourth incident, a resident told police that his vehicle was burglarized on July 15 while it was parked in the 1400 block of Margate Drive Personal items were taken from the vehicle.

In a fifth incident, a resident on Lamont Terrace told police that four people were checking doors on his vehicles which were parked in his driveway. One person entered his vehicle, a  gray Hyundai Santa Fe, and stole a key. He stated the key is valued at approximately $250. A second incident on Lamont Terrace was reported by a resident who told police that their vehicle was broken into overnight. While the resident noticed several items on the seat of the vehicle, nothing was reported missing.

A seventh report involving a break-in to vehicles occurred in the 400 block of Satinwood. A resident reported to police that someone entered two vehicles overnight. One, a 2004 Buick Century, had its door slightly ajar with the contents of the glove box and center console spilled onto the seats. Nothing was stolen, but since the door was left open and the interior light on, the car would not start. A second car, a Mercedes SUV, had contents of the glove box and center console spilled on the seats. Nothing, however, was reported missing.

 

Vandalism – Police reported vandalism at 15 E. Dundee Rd. that included various graffiti on the building and, written in black marker on two pieces of old, abandoned furniture was "Down with the north shore, heil Rob Crimo".

 

High-speed DUI A 39-year-old Chicago man faces three charges including after he was driving in excess of 100 mph on Lake-Cook Road. Police say Jason Whitten was observed at the intersection of eastbound Lake Cook Road and Milwaukee Avenue where his speed was recorded at 95 mph. According to report, “as the vehicle descended the overpass, it accelerated to 105 mph.” Police say Whitten turned on to southbound Portwine Road where he pulled into a grassy area near the entrance to the Cook County Forest Preserve Camp Dan Beard parking area. Whitten was apprehended without incident. He received Cook County citations for Driving While License Suspended, Speeding 35+ mph over posted speed limit, and Operating an Uninsured. Reports did not say if he had a camping permit.


Packages taken -- Police responded to the 1300 block of Rose Blvd for a theft report. Police learned two unknown subjects took several packages from the victim's doorway.

Vin 90 Kitchen + Bar, serving American Fare with an Asian Flair at The Arboretum Club, 401 Half Day Rd., is celebrating its grand opening through Sunday, July 24. The full-service restaurant and bar is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. and also provides food and beverage service to golfers at WJ Golf.

 

Rub-a-dub-dub, planners favor new auto scrub

The Buffalo Grove Planning and Zoning Commission have given its support to a luxury car wash on Milwaukee Avenue. The Daily Herald reports that plans for the “Spotless Auto Spa at 301 N. Milwaukee Ave. is headed to the Buffalo Grove village board for a final decision.”

 

National Night Out Aug. 2

The Buffalo Grove Park District is hosting National Night Out from 5:30 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker Rd. This free event will include a Business Expo, meet and greet with the Buffalo Grove Police and Fire departments, giveaways, live music from Hi Infidelity (6:30 – 9 p.m.) and food for purchase from Dorfler’s Market, along with a variety of food trucks. Residents can also enjoy the Village’s rescheduled fireworks show, sponsored by BITS, starting at 9 p.m.

 

Junior Police Academy wraps up


Fourteen children completed the recent Buffalo Grove Junior Police Academy. Participants learned many aspects of the police profession, including evidence collection, and internet safety presented by a School Resource Officer, hands-on training, and much more. The graduation ceremony was followed by a K-9 demonstration.

 

Summer concert series features “Burning Bridges”

The next concert in the Park District’s Summer Concert Series Tuesday night, is from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 featuring the band Burning Bridges. The concert is at Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker Rd.

Attendees can bring blankets, picnic baskets and lawn chairs and can pre-order from Nino's Pizzeria which will deliver your order to Willow Stream For weather related updates on the day of concerts, check the Rainout Line app, or call (847) 235-6857.

 

Summer Library Adventure ends July 31

The Indian Trails Public Library’s Summer Library Adventure ends July 31.Participants can get an adventure map log from a service desk with activities to complete, or download a log from home.

There are three ways to register: In-person at the Main Library or Branch, online through the Beanstack website or app (Apple) (Android) or by phone 847-459-4100.

Foreman cited for aquatic excellence

The Association of Aquatic Professionals (AOAP) has named Buffalo Grove Park District aquatics facilities supervisor, Jenn Foreman, the July 2022 Competitor Aquatic Professional of the Month.

The Competitor Aquatics Professional of the Month is a recurring AOAP feature, shedding light on an Aquatics Professional who has risen above the competition. With more than 15 years of aquatics experience, Foreman currently oversees one year-round facility, and two seasonal facilities.

Important update about Village Board meeting

July 18th Village Board Meeting to be virtual only

As reported in the July 15 edition of Buffalo Grove News and Information, the Buffalo Grove Village Board is meeting Monday, July 18.

However, the meeting will be virtual only.

Car theft / Communications, Community Engagement director hired / Look for "The Total Patcher"

SUV swiped – A 2019 Nissan Rogue was reported stolen from a driveway in the 1300 block of Berkley Court on July 9. Police were told the vehicle was apparently taken between midnight and 4 a.m. It was later recovered in Zion on the same day. According to reports, personal items were taken from the vehicle.

Vandals hit Dundee Road – Two vacant buildings were damaged by vandals. On July 9, police say a window was apparently broken by two rocks and a boulder in a building at 15 E. Dundee.

Two days later, a glass door was broken in the 900 block of Dundee Road. Aside from the broken glass, no other damage was reported.

Director of Communication, Community Engagement hired

Molly Gillespie has been named director of the village’s newly created Communication and Community Engagement Department. The new department will centralize village-wide communications, support all departments and identify opportunities to leverage community engagement. 

Gillespie, who starts in her role July 27, was tapped to lead the department after 12 years in public service, including eight years serving communications roles with the City of Elgin.

The Communications and Community Engagement program was approved as part of the 2022 Budget, consisting of two full-time positions, including a director and coordinator. The new department will oversee all communications including news releases, e-newsletters, social media, and newsletters while exploring other opportunities to engage with the community.

 

Legislative town hall Aug. 4

The area’s state representatives and state senators will meet with constituents at a “Town Hall Meeting” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4 at the Buffalo Grove Park District Community Arts Center, 225 N. McHenry Road.

            The state-sponsored forum will include state representatives Daniel Didech (D-59) and John Carroll (D-57) in addition to state senators Adriane Johnson (D-30) and Julie Morrison (D-29).

 

Free concert series to feature “Industrial Drive”

The Park District’s free Tuesday night concert continues Tuesday, July 19 with a performance by Industrial Drive from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker Rd. The band features a variety of rock. Each night will feature a different local food vendor.

The vendor for July 19 is Da Local Boy, which features Hawaii regional cuisine. Beer, wine and soft drinks will also be available for purchase at every concert. Residents can bring food and nonalcoholic beverages into the park; however, alcohol must be purchased at the park, and may not be brought to the park.

 

“Footloose” performances set

Big Deal Productions will present Footloose for its 2022 Summer Musical. The production will be presented at the Community Arts Center, 225 N. McHenry Rd., at 7:30 pm on July 22, 23, 29 and 30 and at 3 pm. on July 24 and 31

Tickets for adults and teens ages 13 and up are $18 in advance or $20 at the door (plus a $1 convenience fee). Park District offers “Free Fun Tuesdays”

The Park District is inviting residents to play in the park and join the Park District’s “Park Squad” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. this Tuesday, July 19 at Rick Drazner Park, 401 Aptakisic Rd.

The Park Squad will host a variety of fun activities for children of all ages. For a list of activities, go to bgparks.org. Library hosts “Jigglejam”

The Indian Trails Public Library will host “Jodi Koplin's Jigglejam” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.

The program is open to children ages 3 and older with a caregiver. The program will give children a chance to wiggle, jiggle and giggle along to Koplin’s imaginative tunes. Free tickets will distributed 30 minutes before the program. Click here for more information.

Chicago River presentation topic

The Indian Trails Public Library will present “Civic Spotlight: Friends of the Chicago River” at 6:30 p.m. on July 18,

Presenter Mark Hauser will discuss the history of the Chicago River, its ecology and the Friends of the Chicago River conservation efforts. Click here for registration information.

 

Village unleashes the “Total Patcher”

Public Works has started working its way through the village with its Total Patcher. This machine enables the street section to address spot locations by filling them with a mixture of tar, sand and gravel.

A temporary gravel layer tops off the patch to keep traffic flowing while the mix cures. After a few days, loose stone is swept up and the repair is complete. Read more about the Total Patcher process at this link.

 

40 citations issued during holiday

Buffalo Grove Police issued a total of 40 traffic citations during enhanced “Click It or Ticket” traffic enforcement over the Fourth of July holiday. Included were 24 seat belt citations, one child, two distracted driving, four speeding, one suspended driver’s license, and eight other traffic citations were issued during the duration of the campaign which ran from June 17 through the early morning hours of July 5.

The enforcement period was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs. 

 

Board meets July 18

The Village Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 18, in the Jeffrey Braiman Council Chambers at Village Hall, 50 Raupp Blvd. The agenda can be found here.

 

Flushing program continues

The Water Section of the Public Works Department is two-thirds of the way through its hydrant flushing program. Village officials say flushing fire hydrants regularly rinses out pipes, prevents taste and color issues from developing, allows for a review of flows and pressures, and ensures hydrants are operating effectively.

Attempted murder charges filed / Domestic violence and firearms forum topic / Concert goes country

 Attempted murder charges filed -- Two Palatine men were charged with Class 1 Attempted Murder following a stabbing on Wednesday, June 28 in in the 600 block of Trace Drive.The men charged are Ryan Bruce, 33, and Ryan Neises, 20.
          According to police, officers were dispatched to an apartment for a report of a person who had been stabbed. Police located a person who was bleeding from lacerations in the arm and a puncture wound on the back. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and is recovering according to police.
         Buffalo Grove Police were able to identify two suspects who were known to the victim. Police say the victim had a previous altercation with one of the suspects and was spotted by the suspect near the Burger King restaurant at 1515 W. Dundee Road. Police say the victim was followed home where the stabbing took place. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arriving.
         Bruce and Neises were taken into custody by Buffalo Grove police with assistance from the Palatine Police Department.
         As of Friday, both men were being held without bond. Their next court date is set for 9 a.m. on July 29. at the Cook County Circuit Court in Rolling Meadows.

Families displaced by fires

Six families were forced out of their homes following two recent residential fires. Five families were displaced after a fire at 941 Pine Tree Circle South on Sunday, July 3. The fire, in a multi-family residential condominium building, resulted in a roof collapse. One person was taken to a hospital for observation. Two firefighters were treated at the scene. Firefighters from 18 area fire departments responded. A second fire occurred on July 5 in a single-family home at 1342 Brandywyn Ln. According to reports, firefighters were summoned to the house on reports of flames coming from the roof. No injuries were reported. Both fires are under investigation.

Vehicles targeted in break-ins

Buffalo Grove police report that six vehicles were broken into during the past week. In all cases, police say the interiors were “ransacked,” but no personal items were taken. According to police criminal trespass to vehicles incidents occurred in the 2200 block of Miramar Lane, the 900 block of Shady Grove Lane, two in the 1200 block of Devonshire Road,

Police say that there were two incidents of burglary to a motor vehicle. One was reported in the 0 – 10 block of Chestnut Court East, another in the 1200 block of west Dundee Road.

Alcohol thefts – People who weren’t trying to steal stuff from cars were opting for alcohol instead. Buffalo Grove police say a six pack of Budweiser beer was swiped from a gas station’s convenience store at 10 west Dundee Road, while a couple allegedly swiped several bottles of alcohol from the Jewel at 79 N. McHenry Road. Reports did not say what kind of alcohol was taken or if it was better than Budweiser.

A real nuisance – A resident in the 2300 block of Apple Hill Lane reported that vandals tossed “paper” into trees and left food in the yard and in the mailbox.

Domestic violence and firearms presentation topic

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Lauren Callinan and A Safe Place's Director of Development, Demaris Lorta are the feature speakers at Vernon Township's next Firearm Safety Event, “Domestic Violence & the Danger of Firearms” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13.

They will discuss the tools available to domestic violence victims and the people who care about them that can be used to decrease the risk of a firearm being used in a domestic violence incident. The program will discuss the difference between Orders of Protection and Firearm Restraining Orders, about the support services available in Lake County and additional topics.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been an increase of gun violence in Lake County that corresponds with a 500% increase in firearm sales since March 2020.

The event begins at 7 p.m. on July 13 and will be at the Vernon Township Community Services Building, 2900 N. Main St., Buffalo Grove.

 

Blood donors needed

In an email newsletter to residents, County Board Member Marah Altenberg reminded residents that NorthShore University Health Systems is seeking blood donations for the victims of the Highland Park shooting. Donations can be made through Vitalant or directly to NorthShore Hospital by appointment at DonateBlood@northshore.org or by phone at (847) 570-2242. 

 

Safety Town Saturday scheduled

The Park District is holding a second session of “Safety Town Saturday” from July 16 through Aug. 13 at Rick Drazner Park, 401 Aptakisic Rd.

Each of the four sessions are designed to prepare students for the summer months and outdoor adventures, including camping, family vacations, day camp, bicycle riding, water, sports, and especially stranger danger.

This session will include new safety topics, and exciting games and crafts. Bikes and motorized cars are provided. Each participant must bring a helmet, and wear shoes and socks to each class. For more information, contact Liz Sass at (847) 850-2136 or liz@bgparks.org.

 

Tuesday night concert series goes country

The Park District’s Tuesday night concert series July 12 will feature “Gone Country.” The free concert at Willow Stream Park is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.. Food will be available from Serena's Grill. Beer, wine and soft drinks are available for purchase at every concert. Attendees are welcome to bring food and nonalcoholic beverages into the park. Alcohol, however, must be purchased at the park, and may not be brought in with you.

 

Enhanced safety at BG days likely

Enhanced safety measures for Buffalo Grove Days are likely in wake of the mass shooting in Highland Park. Village Manager Dane Bragg told the Journal & Topics that “We are reviewing safety protocols and making recommendations and modifications that are warranted for Buffalo Grove Days, but what those will be is still too early to tell.” Buffalo Grove Days is scheduled from Sept. 1 to 5.

The village provided first-responder support to Highland Park on July 4 and as of Friday, July 8, was continuing to provide assistance

 

Stormwater basin checks ahead

The village’s Engineering Department will be sending letters to homeowners association boards and maintenance companies for annual stormwater basin inspections.

Inspections play a critical role in ensuring the stormwater system is functioning. Most inspections take 20 - 30 minutes and help identify or address issues before they become larger, urgent, costly or destructive. For more information and resources, click here.
