Retail thefts surge / Pride parade, picnic Sunday / Watch your watering

 Retail thefts -- Police responded to a series of thefts from area retail stores including Walgreens at 15 N. Buffalo Grove Rd. where store personnel said two subjects stole alcohol and miscellaneous items in the store without paying, the total loss was $278.92. This investigation is ongoing. Police report four reports of thefts from Woodman’s Market. In one case, $79.59 of merchandise while in a second case, a person stole $3.29 in merchandise while in the third case, two people tried to make off with $120 worth of merchandise. A fourth person was nabbed trying to make off with $99.52 with merchandise.

            The Jewel at McHenry and Lake-Cook roads was not immune to the recent wave of retail thefts. Store personnel told police that three people stole six bottles of alcohol, totaling $339.94 into a six-pack liquor carrier, put a plastic bag over it, and walked out of the store without paying for the merchandise.

Burglary – A guest at the Sheraton Four-points told police that someone entered his unoccupied room and stole miscellaneous items. Police did not indicate what was taken or how the person entered the room.

Cash theft – A man told police that he lost his money clip containing $150 cash. He told police that when he arrived back in the area where he lost it, he found the money clip, but the cash was missing.

Pride parade, picnic Sunday, June 4

            The 2023 Buffalo Grove Pride Parade is set for 11 a.m., Sunday June 4. The parade will have a new route this year, beginning at Buffalo Grove Road and LaSalle Lane and ending at the Buffalo Grove Park District’s fitness center, 601 Deerfield Parkway. A picnic, sponsored by the Park District, will follow the parade in Mike Rylko Park, 1000 N. Buffalo Grove Rd.

Park District going to the dogs

Dog owners and their canines can enjoy a variety of vendors, an adoption program while mingling with other dog owners at the “Bow Wow Dog Expo” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at the Happy Tails Dog Park, 835 Commerce Court. This is a free event.

All dogs must have current shots.

Farmers market opens June 18

The  Buffalo Grove Farmers' Market begins its 15th year on Sunday, June 18 at Mike Rylko Park. The hours 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

The BG Farmers Market is held every Sunday through Oct. 15. Learn more at the market’s Facebook page  or at this site.

Blood drive Saturday

The next community blood drive is scheduled at the Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Dr., from 8  a.m. - 1 p.m. this Saturday, June 3.

Donors are required to provide an ID, and the entire blood donation process takes about one hour. Please prepare for donations by eating well and staying hydrated.

Library Foundation plans fundraiser

            A fundraiser for The Foundation for the Vernon Area Public Library District is set at two area Culver’s on June 20.

            Persons dining at the Culver’s in Buffalo Grove at 450 McHenry Rd. or in Lincolnshire at 405 N. Milwaukee Ave will have a portion of their purchase donated to the Foundation. Diners need to mention the Vernon Area Public Library when they place their order.

The fundraiser is the start of new fundraising efforts to support the library’s facilities and services.

The mission of the Foundation for the Vernon Area Public Library is to enhance library services to the community by securing additional resources for library programs and projects not normally met by public funding. Proposed widening of BG Road challenged

            Lake County officials found that a proposed widening of Buffalo Grove Road from Ill. Rt. 22 (Half Day Road) to Rt. 45 may not be popular. The Daily Herald reports that some residents question the need for an expanded Buffalo Grove Road.

Village cited for 2023 budget

The village recently earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its fiscal year 2023 budget. It’s the 12th year in a row the village has received the award.

GFOA assesses how well budgets serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

Summer water use guidelines now in effect

Summer water use restrictions are in effect village-wide through Sept. 15. During this time, sprinkling is prohibited from noon to 6 p.m.

The village asks residents to only water on odd or even numbered days corresponding to their home address. Additional information on the village's water conservation efforts at this link.
