Battery cases reported / Memorial Day observance set / Armadillos?
Domestic battery – Officers responded to the ten block of Oak Creek Drive for a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival police met with a victim, who said she had an altercation with a 35-year-old man. After speaking to both parties about the altercation, the man was charged with domestic battery violence.
Battery – A 65-year-old woman was charged with battery after an allocation with another person in their residence in the 1200 block of Franklin. Reports say the woman threatened and then attacked the other person.
Car part theft— Buffalo Grove police say a resident in the 1200 block of Johnson Drive reported the muffler and exhaust system was “slightly detached” from the bottom of the vehicle. Reports say the right exhaust and muffler were taken.
Bike swiped – A customer at the Dairy Queen at 702 S. Buffalo Grove Road told police that her bike was stolen while she was inside. Reports say the bike was in the bike rack by Garden Fresh, which is in the same shopping plaza as the Dairy Queen. The bike was valued at less than $500.
Burglary – Police report that someone broke into the Dollar General store at 1212 W. Dundee. Reports say a window at the store was broken and an undetermined amount of cash was taken. Reports say thieves also broke into the store next door, but nothing was taken because the store is vacant.
ATM heist fails -- Police say several people were reportedly “messing with an ATM” at the U.S. Bank, 1 W Dundee Rd. Reports say that when officers arrived, the group fled in two cars and were able to elude pursuing officers. Nothing was reported stolen.
Package swiped – A resident in the 2000 block of Avalon reported that the contents of a package delivered by Amazon were stolen. The value was less than $500.
A retail theft with a twist. -- Police responded to the Walgreens at 15 N. Buffalo Grove Road for a report of a theft. Upon arrival police were told a female subject took merchandise and left the store without paying. But wait, there’s more. Reports say the woman was eventually found near the area, returned to the store, and returned the merchandise back to Walgreens. She was issued a trespass warning and an adjudication ticket for retail theft, and was then released from custody.
Reported traffic citations – Buffalo Grove Police report that from May 1 through May 15, they wrote five tickets for DUI, four for having a suspended vehicle registration, three for driving on a suspended or revoked license and four for other traffic violations.

Memorial Day ceremony set
The annual Memorial Day service at Knopf Cemetery, 20685 Arlington Heights Road, is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27.
The event will include presentations as well as a keynote address by Lt. Matthew Page, staff chaplain at the Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes Naval Base.
The ceremony is sponsored and coordinated by Kingswood United Methodist Church, which is trustee of the cemetery.
Cops hit the roof for Special Olympics
Members of the Buffalo Grove Police Department grabbed a donut and then hit the roof as part of the annual “Cop on a Rooftop” fund raiser to benefit Special Olympics.
Police officials say $3,650 was raised in Buffalo Grove.

D21 names two new principals
School District 21 has named new principals for Field and Twain Elementary Schools, along with a new assistant principal for Riley Elementary School.
Shaver will join Field in the principal role as of July 1 while Winnie Clausell is set to assume the principal role at Twain. Both start their positions July 1.
Jonathan Sanchez will join Riley as its new assistant principal effective July 1
Farmers Market moving
The on-going construction of the
Park District Amphitheater will force the Farmers Market to move to a new
location – but not far. Organizers say the market will be moved to the
adjoining parking lot.
The temporary spot is the center, ballfield parking lot with the same entrances as before. The Farmers Market is set to open on Sunday, June 16.
Vernon Twp. food pantry lists needs
The Vernon Twp. food pantry is asking for the following items: canned tuna & chicken, pasta sauce, rice, boxed potatoes, canned pineapple or peaches, cereal, pancake mix & syrup, coffee & tea, toilet paper & paper towels.
Donations can be dropped off at 3050 N. Main St., in Buffalo Grove at the main entrance from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. There is also a shopping cart outside the doors 24/7 where items can be left.

Stevenson grad developing satellite
To infinity and beyond? For one Stevenson graduate, his sights are set into space. The Daily Herald reports that “Logan Hanssler, a Stevenson High School graduate now studying molecular engineering and astrophysics at the University of Chicago, is leading a team designing a small research satellite NASA plans to send into orbit in 2026.” Steve Zalusky’s report can be found here.
Chabad plans Lag B’omer celebration
Northwest Suburban Chabad is hosting a Lag B’omer celebration starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. The event will include entertainment, dinner, music, a bonfire and other family activities.
Costs are $10 a person or $36 a family. Sponsorships are available for $180.
According to Chabad, Lag B’omer, the 33rd day of the Omer count—this year, May 26, 2024—is a festive day on the Jewish calendar that honors Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, author of the Zohar.

Library plans AV sale
The Indian Trails Library District is planning an audio-visual pop-up sale from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 25 at the main Library, 355 Schoenbeck Rd., Wheeling.
Attendees can purchase AV items for $1 each. The sale will include CDs, DVDs, LPs / Records. The use of ISBN scanners is allowed only between 11:30 and noon.
Memorial Day traffic enforcement set
The Buffalo Grove Police Department will be increasing enforcement efforts as part of a “Click It or Ticket” through Memorial Day weekend.
The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.
