Village to welcome new Police Chief

A reception and swearing-in ceremony for Brian Budds, newly appointed Chief of the Buffalo Grove Police Department, will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, with a swearing-in ceremony immediately following at 7:30 p.m. during the Village Board meeting.

            Budds is replacing Chief Steven Casstevens who is retiring Nov. 11. Casstevens has been Buffalo Grove’s Police Chief for nine years.

            Budds has been chief of the Western Springs Police Department since 2016. He was deputy chief there for 10 years prior and a police officer and detective there from 1998 to 2006. Additional information about Budds’ background can be found in this report from the Daily Herald. 

Police Department gets grant

The Buffalo Grove Police Department has been awarded a Federal Fiscal Year 2023 Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant to conduct additional traffic safety efforts. The STEP program focuses on high- visibility enforcement and strategies aimed at saving lives and preventing injuries by reducing traffic

The grant, which runs from Oct. 1, 2022, through Sept. 30, 2023, will enable the Buffalo Grove Police Department to conduct additional enforcement efforts to supplement mandatory and optional campaign enforcement dates scheduled during some of the deadliest times of the year.

The supplemental efforts will focus on the leading contributory causes of crashes: speeding, impaired driving, electronic device use, failure to yield and disobeying traffic control signals, as well as occupant restraint violations.

The grant is funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Special Needs bowling event set

The Rick Kahen Commission for Residents with Disabilities in partnership with the Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove and Bowlero, is hosting a fun evening for residents with special needs at the upcoming Bowling with Buddies event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20. at Bowlero, 350 McHenry Road.

The bowling alley will be closed to the public and reserved for the participants, and bowling and dinner are free to the participants. “Buddies,” who are volunteers with the Rotary Club, will be on hand to assist participants as needed. The event is Halloween-themed, and participants are encouraged to wear costumes. 

Schneider to host congressional update

U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider (D-10) will host a Congress on Your Corner event at the Vernon Township Community Center, 2900 Main St. in Prairie View, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. Schneider will answer questions from constituents and brief attendees on his work in Washington, including recently passed legislation. 

Applications open for county assistance programs

Applications are open now through Oct. 21 for the Cook County Promise Guaranteed Income Pilot, which provides no-strings-attached $500 monthly cash payments to 3,250 Cook County residents for 24 months. The goal is to improve participants’ financial and health outcomes, and for them to understand the impacts of direct cash assistance on individuals and their communities. Lake County renters who faced financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic and meet eligibility requirements may apply for the new Lake County Rental Assistance (LCRA) Program, which provides help for individuals paying rent. The application period runs through Nov. 15. 

Caregivers program set

State Senator Adriane Johnson (D-30) is hosting a Caregiver Fair to provide resources for caregivers and those that they care for. It will be from 3 – 5 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Buffalo Grove Community Arts Center at 225 McHenry Rd.

There will be a meal prep demonstration offered on site for people who are differently abled. This fair will be an opportunity for Caregivers to connect and receive resources and build community. 

Trick or treat drive-through set

The Buffalo Grove Fire and Police Departments are holding a Trick or Treat Drive-through from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the main fire station, 1051 Highland Grove Dr. Walk-ups are not permitted.

Buffalo Grove trick-or-treating hours are from 3 - 8 p.m. Monday, October 31. Residents are encouraged to turn on exterior lights to show they are welcoming trick-or-treaters. 

Project Fire Buddies looking for participants

Project Fire Buddies' mission is to bring joy to children struggling with serious illnesses in the community.

Police reports

Stolen vehicle -- A 2010 Nissan Maxima was reported missing from a residence in the 1500 block of Quail Hollow Drive. Police have not reported if the vehicle has been recovered.

Retail theft – Employees at Discovery Clothing, 1309 Dundee Road, contacted police after they noticed a black female walk out of the store wearing a black and white jacket with the letter "B" stitched on the chest and holding a box of footwear. Reports say an employee followed the woman outside of the store in an attempt to get her to pay for the items. According to police, the woman refused and left the area. The items reportedly missing included the jacket, valued at $34.99 and a pair of knee-high black boots valued at $26.99.

Phone missing – A customer at the Chase Bank at 15235 Deerfield Parkway told police he left his cell phone near the bank teller window and when he returned 15 minutes later, the phone was missing.

Catalytic converter missing – A customer at the Extended Stay Motel, 1525 Busch Parkway, reported to police that when he started his vehicle, it was unusually loud. Upon further investigation he discovered that its catalytic converter had been stolen.

Car burgled -- A resident told police that her wallet was taken out of her car while it was parked at Willow Stream Park. Reports say the vehicle’s windows were left open.

Shoes swiped – Employees at Rogan’s Shoes, 1300 W. Dundee Rd. told police that a man walked to the back of the store holding a shoe box. Reports say the man was greeted him at the door, and did not raise any suspicion. However, reports say that while inspecting inventory, the employee spotted an incorrect pair of boots in a box that did not match the description. She also noticed that a security tag was ripped off a pair of boots that could not be located. Staff reviewed video surveillance footage and discovered the man swapping the boots, placing them in the same box he came in with and then left the store.

Fence hopper damages cars / Trick-or-Treat hours / “Howl-O-Ween Pooch Parade” coming up

 Fence hopping person damages vehicles – Police are investigating criminal damage to a vehicle after a person told them he saw a white pick-up truck, possibly a F-150, parked near 655 Grove Drive.

The man told them that the driver exited the vehicle and jumped over the fence to Trace

Drive. The subject then slashed a tire on a red sedan and jumped back over the fence to leave the parking lot. While the man was on the phone with 9-1-1, he said he saw the white pick-up truck park behind the red sedan and slashed another tire. The offender is described as a male white, approximately 5'10” wearing a black hoodie and black pants.

Bike swiped – Police report a bicycle valued at $400 was stolen from a business while an employee was at work in the 100 block of Dundee Road. Reports say the bike was secured to a pole with a chain and lock in the alley behind the business. The employee told police that she noticed the lock were cut and the bicycle was gone.

Catalytic converter thefts continue – A resident in the 1500 block of Johnson Drive told police that he heard excessive noise from his vehicle's exhaust system when he started his car. He found that the vehicle’s catalytic converter had been removed. Meanwhile, a customer at Woodman’s told police that his catalytic converter was stolen while he was in the store at around 2 a.m.

Stroller stolen? -- A resident told police that her husband took their son out for a walk in their stroller and left the stroller unattended for a few minutes in the parking lot at 160 Lexington Drive. ·When he returned, the stroller was gone. Police say they told the woman that someone may have mistakenly thought the stroller was being thrown away due to the proximity of the garbage dumpsters. She was encouraged to ask the business owner at 160 Lexington Dr to post a flyer explaining what had happened and request the return of the stroller.

Meds missing -- Staff at Mariano's Fresh Market reported various over-the-counter medications, including Prilosec, Nicorette, Nexium, and Pepcid were apparently stolen. Reports say management noticed a male exited the store carrying a green grocery bag full of store merchandise. The manager said she followed him out of the store and saw him throw the items in a dumpster behind the building. Although the products were recovered, they had to be discarded. The man was described as being 25-30 years old, wearing a brown shirt and black pants. He was wearing a medical mask and had a short dreadlocks hairstyle.

Liquor looted – A Walgreens employee told police that a man allegedly took five bottles of alcohol and left the store at 15 N. Buffalo Grove Road without paying. The man was last seen entering a vehicle and traveling north on Buffalo Grove Road. The employee showed police a video of the subject taking the alcohol in the liquor section.

Vehicles damaged – A resident in the 100 block of Woodstone reported to police that two of his vehicles were damaged while they were parked in their driveway. He told police that the driver-side mirror housing and the rear passenger-side door frame on his 2022 Honda Civic were damaged by something that melted the plastic. He said his 2020 Honda HR-V suffered similar damage.

Vehicles burgled – Police report three cars were broken into during the past week. The first was in the 400 block Castlewood Lane. Reports say personal items and currency were taken from the vehicle overnight on Oct. 3.

In a second case, police say a car parked in the 500 block of Checker Drive was broken into. The vehicle’s owner said she found the vehicle’s identification card and other paperwork in the grass outside of his vehicle when he went outside to his vehicle in the morning. The glove box had also been opened.

            The third case involved a vehicle parked in the 500 block of Arbor Gate Lane. Reports say the vehicle’s owner noticed that someone had entered his car, but did not take anything.

Trick-or-Treating times set

Halloween Trick-or-Treating hours in Buffalo Grove are Monday, October 31 from 3 - 8 p.m. Residents are encouraged to turn on exterior lights to show they are welcoming trick-or-treaters.

 Early voting begins Oct. 24

Early voting for the November 8 election begins October 24 and runs through November 7. Offices up for election including Illinois Governor, state representatives and senators, and county elected seats across Illinois.

Used book sale Oct. 8

The Indian Trails Public Library District will have a used book Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Patrons can fill a bag of books for $5. The entrance and exit for the book sale will be through the south doors of the library in the Lake Cook room (facing the park).Use of ISBN scanners is permitted between noon to 2 pm.

The Library is located at 355 Schoenbeck Rd. in Wheeling.

 

Drug take back Oct. 29

Safely dispose of expired, unused or unneeded medications at the annual Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Police Station, 46 Raupp Blvd.

There is a permanent receptacle to drop off unwanted prescription drugs in the police station’s lobby. For more information, visit the DEA website or call the department's non-emergency number at (847) 459-2560.

 “ScribbleMonster” at ITPLD

The Indian Trails Public Library is hosting “Super Saturday: ScribbleMonster” at 11 a.m. on Oct. 15

Native Americans topic of program

“Civic Spotlight: No One Ever Sees Indians: Native Americans in Media,” is the topic of a program at the Indian Trails Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.

Speaker Ernest M Whiteman III, will discuss the many representations of Native Americans in media and how these representations inform audiences’ perceptions of Native peoples and issues. Click here to register. 

Passenger Safety Week results listed

The Buffalo Grove Police Department issued 15 seat belt citations, three distracted driving citations and two other citations during its Child Passenger Safety Week enforcement campaign from Sept. 18 to 30.

Buffalo Grove Police joined forces with more than 200 other local law enforcement agencies to increase awareness of proper child safety seat use and encourage all motorists to buckle up and pay attention. The effort featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities, including a media campaign.

Comedy to be presented

Big Deal Productions will present its 2022 adult non-musical production, the classic comedy Blithe Spirit at the Community Arts Center, 225 N. McHenry Road,  at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 3 pm on Oct.16 and 23.

“Pooch Parade” Oct. 22

A “Howl-O-Ween Pooch Parade” will be held at Willow Stream Park from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22

This free event will include a canine costume contest and doggy egg hunt. All furry-tailed friends and humans are welcome to attend, even if you do not have a dog.

Prizes and awards will be given to the most unique and creative costumes; categories include best costume and best family themed costume. Day of registrations will be accepted. Arts and crafts fair Oct. 22

The Park District is sponsoring an arts & crafts fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Community Arts Center, 225 N. McHenry Road.

D21 Workshop set for parents

Community Consolidated School District 21 is offering a Restorative Practices Workshop to all parents/guardians in the District. The workshop will be available in English and Spanish and is targeted to families with students in all grades levels.  Childcare for ages 3-10 will be provided in the evening session.

The programs will be at the Hawthorne Early Childhood, 200 Glendale Street, Wheeling, on Oct. 18.

Cops probe gunfire / Early voting starts / BGRA workshops

Shots fired – Buffalo Grove Police are continuing their investigation into shots being fired in Town Center Sept. 30. According to reporting by the Daily Herald, police found about three dozen spent shell casings in and around a parking lot and a car with bullet holes in it outside the Bowlero bowling alley. Police did not confirm unattributed comments on social media as to the ethnicity or number of the shooters. Police are asking people with information to contact the Buffalo Grove Police Department (847) 459-2560.

Multiple charges filed in domestic battery case – Buffalo Grove Police report that Frederick Wackenhut, 27, of the 1100 block of Courtland Drive,  was charged with two counts of Domestic Battery, Class 3 Felony Domestic, Battery, Class 4 Criminal Damage to Property as well as Criminal Damage to Government Supported Property, following an incident Sept. 22. The victim was treated for minor injuries. Wackenhut was taken to Lake County Bond Court where his bond was set for $25,000. Police did not provide details of the incident.

Child endangerment charges filed in DUI case – A 48-year-old Lisle woman was charged with two counts of DUI and two counts of endangering the life and health of a child after a crash at north Buffalo Grove Road and west Deerfield Parkway.  Reports say responding officers that Savaja Petreikyte, the driver of one of the vehicles, “was showing signs of alcohol impairment” at the scene.  Following field sobriety tests, she was charged.  Two juvenile children in her car were turned over to guardians.

 

Converter swiped – A resident of the Grove Terrace Condominiums reported to police that the catalytic converter was stolen from their vehicle, a 2009 Honda CR-V.  The vehicle was parked in the parking lot.

Vehicle break-in – A resident in the 900 block of Prague Avenue told police someone entered their vehicle, a 2018 Toyota Highlander, while it was parked in the driveway. Reports did not indicate what, if anything, was taken.

Vehicle theft -- Police report that a resident in the 2000 block of Jordan Terrace contacted them regarding a vehicle theft.  Reports indicate that the resident’s  Lexus was stolen while it was parked inside the garage of the victim's home. Further investigation revealed the victim's overhead garage door was open while the keys were still inside the vehicle. This investigation is ongoing. No further comment.

Retail theft – Management at the Jewel at 79 McHenry Road reported that a man wearing a white coat allegedly took a “shopping cart full of groceries and liquor” from the store without paying. While the incident was reportedly caught on video surveillance, store officials did not list what was taken or the value of the merchandise.

Vandals hit park – Vandals sprayed “temporary blue hairspray” on equipment at Twin Groves Park, 401 W. Aptakisic Road Sept. 22. The hairspray was seen on several items on the playground including a pole, the climbing rock, an outside wall, and a few other items. Reports say the damage does not appear to be permanent.

In other community news…

Bernard Drive construction impacting Alcott Center

The installation of the main water line on Bernard Drive has begun in front of the Alcott Center, and will continue over the next few weeks. The Park District says visitors will have access to the Alcott Center during construction; however, it is expected to cause some congestion during drop off and pickup.

Visitors are encouraged to allow extra time for entering and exiting our parking lot, and drive slowly. Construction updates can be found at the Village of Buffalo Grove's website at vbg.org.

Clove groundbreaking held

Village officials turned the page along with a lot of shovels at the groundbreaking The Clove, the redevelopment project of Town Center. The development will include apartments, restaurants, retail stores and open spaces for public events.

The color of money?

Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim is sponsoring the 4th Annual 6th-8th Grade Art Contest.  Young artists can showcase their talent and enter for a chance to win a prize. This year’s theme is  “Hands”! Students are encouraged to interpret the theme however they see fit and submit a drawing that reflects their own interpretation. Crossing guards in place

In order to boost safe crossing, crossing guards have been added near two schools in D21. The Countryside Reminder reports the guards will be near Longfellow Elementary School on Bernard/Nichols Avenue and Cooper Middle School on Plum Grove Road.

Board OKs tax agreement with firm

The village board recently voted to extend its sales tax-sharing agreement with Business IT Source (BITS) until June 30, 2028. Founded in 2009, BITS provides mid-sized to large companies with information technology services from major manufacturers. Details from the Daily Herald are at this link.

D125 names new Board members

There are three new Stevenson board members. The Countryside Reminder reports the three fill vacancies that have existed since spring. 

Symphonic Band concert to feature stage and screen tunes

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band is happy to present its 2022 Fall Concert, “From Stage and Screen”, which will feature music from the Broadway stage, Hollywood movies, and television shows.  The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m.,  Saturday, Nov. 12 at  the Vernon Hills High School Performing Arts Center 145 Lakeview Parkway in Vernon Hills. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.  Tickets for senior citizens and students are $8.

Early voting begins for Nov. 8 election

Early voting is now in process at the Lake County Administrative Complex lobby in Waukegan and will open Oct. 24 at sites countywide for the Nov. 8 General Election. Early voting is available to any Lake County resident who meets all voter registration requirements. Lake County residents can  use any early voting site regardless of where they live. Election filing begins for spring elections

Planning to run for an office in the April 4, 2023 elections?

Filing petitions can now be circulated.  Filing begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 12.

Filing ends in the Village Clerk’s office at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19.

Spots available on Park Board

There will be three Buffalo Grove Park District Commissioner positions for 4-year terms open for election in the April 4, 2023 consolidated election. Individuals interested in running for a position as a Buffalo Grove Park District Commissioner in this election can pick up petitions at the front desk of the Alcott Center, located at 530 Bernard Drive in Buffalo Grove.

The Alcott Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm.  The circulation period for petitions is September 20, 2022 to December 19, 2022

Those interested in running for a Buffalo Grove Park District Commissioner seat must be a United States citizen, be 18 years old by April 4, 2023, and have been a resident of the Buffalo Grove Park District for at least 1 year prior to the election.

BGRA plans workshops

Registration is open for the BGRA’s upcoming indoor fall skills clinic.

These clinics are taught and led by BGRA coaches and players.  Each session players will focus on baseball skills development including: hitting, throwing, catching, running, speed and strength and much more to keep them sharp and to improve confidence for the upcoming seasons. Each session will conclude with fun competitive games to reinforce the skills that have been worked on. We will have use of the indoor facilities at Gorilla Athletic Training, with pitching mounds, hitting tunnels, hit-trax, radar guns and much more.

Clinics will be held Oct. 18, Oct. 20, Oct. 25, Oct. 27, Nov. 1, and Nov. 3.  Clinics are open to players currently aged 5-14 years old. Clinics are from 6 -7:15 p.m. for 5–9-year-old players, and from 7:15-8:30 p.m. for 10–14-year-old players.

The cost of the clinic is $150 for all 6 sessions.  There is an option to pick just three dates to attend for $100.

The clinic will be held at Gorilla Athletic Training, 958 Corporate Woods Pkwy, Vernon Hills. Players are expected to bring their own bat, glove, and helmets to each session. For additional information about the clinics, email bruins@bgrabaseball.org.

 

Have coffee with a cop

The Police Department's annual “Coffee with a Cop” takes place Wednesday, October 5 from 8 - 10 a.m. at Starbucks, located at 1665 N. Buffalo Grove Road. Stop by for some coffee and meet members of the BGPD.

 

Program looks at historical receipts

A program, "What We Learn from the General Store Receipts," a program set for Oct. 6 at the Vernon Township Community Service Building, 2900 N. Main St., Buffalo Grove.  Additional information can be found here.
