** Man faces multiple charges for resisting arrest, attack on police officer – A 25-year-old Palatine man was charged with four charges resulting from an attempted theft at a home in the 1000 block of Miller Lane. According to reports, officers responded to the home on a report of a “suspicious subject” attempting the residence. Police say that upon arrival the suspect refused to give his real name and when officers attempted to take him into custody, he resisted and fought officers. He was charged with Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer, Obstructing Identification, and Theft.
** Domestic battery cases – Police report they were summoned four times in recent weeks for reports of domestic battery. In all three cases, police say the victims said they had an “altercation” with a man. In all three cases, the offenders were charged with domestic battery / bodily harm and domestic battery /physical contact. The cases occurred in the 500 block of Burnt Ember, the 1000 block of Providence Lane, the 0 -10 block of Villa Verde Drive and the 0 – 10 block of Oak Creek Drive. In that case, a man was charged with theft of coins in addition to domestic battery / bodily harm and domestic battery /physical contact.
** Traffic stop leads to weapon charge – A 23-year-old Lincolnshire man was charged with unlawful use of a firearm following a traffic stop. Police say the man, who was also charged with driving on a suspended or revoked license was cited for the weapons violation after officers say they found a loaded handgun with a round in the chamber and a full 14-round magazine in the vehicle.
** Felony retail theft – Three people, a 39-year-old man from Chicago, a 65-year-old man from Chicago and a 38-year-old woman from Schiller Park were each charged with two counts of felony theft after they were caught swiping an undisclosed amount of alcohol from the Walgreens store at 15 N. Buffalo Grove Road.
** Fire damages park – Police report that “multiple small fires” were set on a baseball field at Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker Road. Reports say that responding officers could smell gasoline near the fires and summoned the Buffalo Grove Fire Department to extinguish the fires. No damage estimate was reported.

A 12-Year-old Buffalo Grove girl, Kaylee Leibach and her mother, Amy, helped the people of Haywood County, North Carolina recover from damage suffered during Hurricane Helene.
What did they do? They organized a book drive for Haywood County flood victims.

After seeing Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers share the story of Helene’s impact on Haywood County on the news, 12-year-old Kaylee Leibach and her mother Amy, from all the way in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, felt inspired to help. They decided to organize a community donation of new children’s books in their hometown, and now their generous efforts will bring smiles and comfort to children affected by the storm in Haywood County.
The donation includes a wide variety of books for children from infancy to elementary school, providing a much-needed escape and fostering a sense of hope and resilience. Kaylee and Amy’s act of kindness exemplifies the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together to help those in need.
The free books will be available for families at all four branches of the Haywood County Public Library during normal business hours starting on Wednesday, Jan. 8th, 2025: “This thoughtful donation is a beautiful reminder that even in times of hardship, kindness and generosity shine through,” said Dillon Huffman, Haywood County Public Information Officer. “We are incredibly grateful to Kaylee, Amy, and the Buffalo Grove community for their heartfelt support.”
Families are encouraged to visit their local library branch to pick up books for their children and enjoy these free wonderful gifts. The Haywood County Public Library is proud to be a part of this heartwarming initiative and remains committed to supporting the community as it recovers from Helene.
Clove apartments about ready
If you’ve ever wanted to live in the shadows of a Chick-fil-A or Panda Express, your opportunity is right around the corner.
According to reporting in the Daily Herald, the first apartments at The 250 Residences, the seven-story residential building at The Clove should be available by the end of the month. The residences are part of the multi-use development under construction on the site of the old Town Center at the intersections of Lake-Cook and McHenry roads.
In addition to Chick-fil-A and Panda Express, residents will have Guzman y Gomez at their front door with an ice cream shop planned for the near future.
Vernon Twp. lists snow guidelines
Vernon Township is reminding residents to avoid placing garbage receptacles on, or near roadways maintained by the township during snow removal, because snow plows may damage them.
Residents are encouraged to pile snow in the direction of traffic and create a pocket on the opposite side to reduce snow from plows blocking the driveway. More information on snow and ice control can be found at this link..
Parking permits for Prairie View Metra station available
Commuter parking permit applications for the Metra station in Prairie View are now available.
Commuters who want to purchase their 2025 permit, should complete the form at this site.
Permit payment receipts will be provided via email. Payment can be made with cash, by check (payable to Vernon Township), or credit/debit, with all payments submitted to the Township Administrative Office.
RBG scholarship applications available
Applications for the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Scholarship Program are now open. This scholarship is a tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice and her commitment to equality and justice.

Partnership leads to counseling program
The Village of Buffalo Grove, in partnership with School District 214 and OMNI, is reinstating a student counseling program aimed at supporting the mental health and substance use challenges faced by Buffalo Grove High School (BGHS) students and their families.
This initiative is made possible through the use of opioid settlement funds allocated to the Village of Buffalo Grove. The program, slated to begin this month, will place a licensed social worker (LSW) at BGHS for 15 hours per week.
The counselor will provide tailored support, including individual and group therapy, mental health awareness education, after-hours family counseling, parent coaching, and mentoring/life skills.
Cops cite 80 during holiday enforcement
The Buffalo Grove Police Department cited 80 drivers during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” traffic safety campaign, targeting impaired and distracted drivers over the holidays. The enforcement campaign ran from Dec.13 through Jan. 2. Citations included 34 for seatbelt violations, four for speeding, eight for distracted driving, five for driving with license suspended/revoked, and 29 other traffic violations.
The enforcement initiative, administered by IDOT and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, underscores the collective commitment to safer roadways, particularly during high-risk times like the holidays.
Schneider begins 6th term
Rep. Brad Schneider was sworn into the 119th Congress to begin his sixth term serving the people of Illinois’s 10th congressional district. “It has been an extraordinary honor to serve the people of Illinois’s 10th congressional district for more than a decade, and I am grateful they have again entrusted me to represent them in Congress,” Schneider said.
Parts of Buffalo Grove are in the 9th congressional district represented by Jan Schakowsky who is now in her 14th term.
New meeting time
Buffalo Grove Village Board meetings are now starting at 7 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than previous meeting times. The Village Board meets in the Jeffrey S. Braiman Council Chambers at Village Hall, located at 50 Raupp Boulevard. Meetings are open to the public and live-streamed on the village’s Facebook page.

ITPLD book challenge underway
Residents of the Indian Trails Public Library District can start the new year strong with a reading goal. All they have to do is read 20 books in 2025 and earn prizes along the way, as well as raffle tickets for the chance to win a grand prize at the end of the year.
Interested readers can log their reading through the Beanstack app or pick up a log at the Adult Services Desk to get started. The challenge runs through the end of 2025.

Used book sale Saturday
The Indian Trails Public Library, 355 Schoenbeck Rd., is holding a used book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 hosted by the Foundation for the Indian Trails Public Library. All proceeds benefit the library.

Buffalo Grove Fire Department administrative assistant Courtney Michaels has been named the 2024 Illinois Fire Service Administrative Professional of the Year
The award, given by the Illinois Fire Chief’s Association, honors Michaels’ work ethic and commitment to the fire service and its members, as well as her public education and safety skills, officials said.
